“Get those clothes off,” the voice boomed out. “You know the rules and regulations.”
The woman looked around to try to reveal from where the voice came - and what a voice, the deep resonance just begging to be obeyed. She noticed the opening, through which she had innocently walked, silently closing. She ran to it but there was no obvious means of re-opening the door, just a rectangular plate at about shoulder height. She touched it but nothing happened.
“Hurry up and get your clothes off.” the voice continued, “We haven’t the time to waste.”
She stood rooted to the spot.
Exasperated the voice continued, “We need to decontaminate. Come on, get a move on.”
Panic pounded through her veins.
“Decontaminate? What have I done? What have I caught?”
Desperately she frantically searched her surroundings, looking for any means of escape. She bounced off unseen objects in her frenzied movements, like a trapped animal in a cage. Thevoice of reason broke through her panic as she thought to herself, “Calm down. It’s too late to worry about yourself. Remember what you are here for.”
She stood still and slowly her breathing became more manageable. Her eyes became accustomed to the light and she started to take stock of her surroundings. She found that she was standing in a clinically, sterile looking room, that reflected sound with too much clarity.
The ultra violet light gave off an eerie feeling of unpredictability and incongruity. No other apparent opening could be seen.
Along one side of the chamber there were four openings that looked like types of cubicles reaching from ceiling to floor. All three walls of these were polka dotted with minute holes. Outside these cubicles, were moulded seats, and beside each of these were small covered cavities, that dropped into the ground. A series of grills covered the rest of the floor; their function was not self-evident.
Again the voice boomed out, and a feeling of helplessness spread through her.
“Take your clothes off please.” the voice sounded its displeasure, “You are holding up procedures. We need to decontaminate you.”
On hearing that word, fear again started to take its hold and the woman began to frantically searching the walls, touching high and low, looking for a mean of escape. She moved towards the cubicles, clasped her hands to her ears, closed her eyes and rocked back and forth, back and forth.
The voice continued with the persistent orders. “You will do as we ask and remove those clothes now. You continue to contravene regulation 279 part a, c and f.” the voice was becoming harsher.
“Rules, regulations,” the female sobbed, “I don't care about these rules and regulations, why don't you understand and why don't you help me.”
The woman cried out despairingly. Her shout made her throat hurt. “Help me.”
At which she sank down and all the tension of the past couple of hours drained out of her as she burst into tears.
